UBISOFT TAPS OUT FROM ZUFFA’S KEYLOCK: ULTIMATE FIGHTING GAME DISPUTE SETTLED

Zuffa, the company behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship, approached game-maker Ubisoft regarding the packaging for Ubi’s ‘Fighters Uncaged.’ ‘Uncaged’ is a mixed martial arts fighting video game that invites players on the back cover to “Become the ULTIMATE FIGHTING weapon!” Zuffa references the phrase “Ultimate Fighting” in numerous trademarks it owns and apparently contacted Ubisoft to see if something could be worked out without filing suit first. The companies, which are otherwise unaffiliated, have agreed to resolve the matter by having Ubisoft change the packaging to delete the “Ultimate Fighting” phrase altogether. A joint statement by the companies was released yesterday.

Too bad Markus ‘Notch’ Persson wasn’t involved, since he might have proposed a steel cage deathmatch to resolve the matter. [See earlier story….] That’d be a pay-per-view worth seeing!
