Yes, the internet is still tightly controlled in China, edited for content that does not fit with the official party line there. The Ministry of Culture recently published a list of 100 songs that were to be deleted from music download sites by September 15th or else any site owner in China will face the consequences. The list was comprised mostly of Asian acts unknown to the West, but contained some American acts as well. Apparently, without saying they are inherently objectionable, the Chinese MoC points out that the songs were not submitted for official approval. Names on the list include Beyonce, Katy Perry, Take That, and six songs by Lady Gaga, including ‘Edge of Glory’ and ‘Judas.’ In a model of alacrity, the list also includes the 12 year-old Backstreet Boys song, ‘I Want it that Way.’
